Southern wyoming backpacking excursion

Location: Jackson Hole, Wyoming 
GS Grade Level: Cadette - Ambassador
(must have completed 6th grade at time of the trip)
Dates: 7/23/2023-7/30/2023
Fee: $1,250/girl
*$250 non-refundable deposit due at time of registration.

Important Disclaimer from Big Wild Adventures - Please Read!
Wilderness travel can be physically demanding. Though prior experience is not required for our trips, good fitness is essential. Depending upon the trip route, you will be hiking from four to ten miles on most days (most trips have one or two scheduled layovers) over variably rugged terrain.
Sustained cardiovascular workouts of power walking, running, hiking, bicycling, etc. are strongly
recommended; weight training is also very helpful. Beginning and maintaining a regular conditioning program until trip departure will greatly enhance your safety and enjoyment!
If you haven’t had a recent physical exam or if you have doubts about your health or fitness, we
strongly recommend that you see your physician before the trip.

Come along and experience the beauty of Southern Wyoming on a backpacking journey. Girl Scouts will work with our guides from Big Wild Adventures to come up with a custom route through with Wilderness. Girl Scouts will explore various elevations from 4,500 to 9,000 ft. Depending on what routes are chosen, Girl Scouts will get a chance to see, majestic snowcapped peaks, waterfalls, wild critters, wildflowers, crystal clear lakes, Bighorn sheep and so much more.  

Girl Scouts will spend 2 days traveling via passenger vans to Wyoming, 5 days and 4 nights Backpacking and another 2 days of travel back home. Big Wild Adventures will provide the following supplies: backpacks, day packs, tents, sleeping bags and pads, food, cooking gear and utensils. Girl Scouts will oversee all other personal items. ​Get the chance to test your rock-climbing skills while discovering the powerful benefits of sisterhood and ways to nurture healthy friendships. This lock-in is designed for Girl Scouts to get the chance to try out rock climbing as well as complete the aMaze Journey.
 
Badge Connections: Interact, Diplomat, and Peacemaker awards as well as their Take Action.

Horseshoe Canyon Climbing Excursion

Known across the Midwest as the best spot for outdoor rock climbing, this weekend is sure to improve your climbing skills. Saturday will be filled with an expertly guided rock-climbing session and if time allows some light hiking. The group will spend both Friday and Saturday night camping at the private campground with access to modern bathrooms and showers. Previous climbing experience is required. Price includes expert rock-climbing guides on location, rock climbing gear, lodging, and food.

​The Cadette Outdoor Journey is rich and exciting badge program as it covers a lot of essential outdoor skills. You will enjoy primitive camping in the Outpost Campsite, help clean up and create an outdoor educational trail, cook entire meals right over a campfire, then take part in a Service Project to give back to Camp Tongawood.

In this Cadette Outdoor Journey you will earn four badges: Night Owl, Trailblazing, Primitive Camper, & Take Action

NEW! Brownie citizen scientist journey day

Location: Camp Tongawood

Girl Scouts will get to spend the day thinking like a Scientist. They will learn how scientists research, collect data and make observations when conducting an experiment. After learning those skills they’ll get to make observations and collect data of their own to become a scientist themselves!

Registration Requirements:  Each troop must have enough adults to meet the proper safety ratio and first aid requirement. Individually registered girls need to have a parent or guardian with them through the duration of the session. Adventure staff do not count in safety ratios. Please remember that each activity is for the girls who are registered.

In this Brownie Citizen Scientist Journey you will earn two badges: Think Like a Citizen Scientist and Take Action.

 

NEW! daisy outdoor journey

Location: Camp Tongawood

The Daisy outdoor journey is the perfect way to introduce your Daisy to the outdoors as well as getting the chance to spend time outside yourself. They will enjoy primitive camping in the Outpost Campsite, learning about all the ways nature can be used in art, help cook meals over a campfire, then take part in a service project to give back to Camp Tongawood.

Daisies are required to be accompanied by an adult during the entire journey. Adults are not required to pay.

In this Daisy Outdoor Journey you will earn four badges:  Buddy Camper badge, Outdoor Art Maker badge, and Take Action


Excursions & Journeys Returning Soon

Devil's Den Backpacking Excursion
​Girls backpack a total of 15 miles over the course of 3 days and primitive camp 2 nights. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are included. Girls should bring 2 dehydrated meals for dinner (meals that only require the addition of boiling water - Mountain House are the recommended brand, if you have a food sensitivity or allergy check out Good To Go Backpacking and dehydrated camping meals).
Senior & Ambassador Outdoor Journey
​In this Senior & Ambassador Outdoor Journey you will earn three badges: Adventurer, First Aid, and Adventure Camper. You will then complete your Take Action Project on your own to earn your Journey award.

​You will enjoy primitive camping in Farmers Field at Camp Prairie Schooner, rappelling off our 40 foot tower, and becoming CPR/First Aid certified if you are not already.
Winter Snow Adventure Excursion
Girls stayed the evening at Camp Prairie Schooner spending evening getting to know one another, making dinner, and enjoy a winter themed movie. The next day they traveled to  Snow Creek in Weston Missouri to spend the day Skiing/Snowboarding. Snow Creek offered  a handful of hills that catered to any skill level. Prior to hitting the slopes, the leaders made sure each girl feels confident in the necessary skills for skiing and snowboarding. The girls will returned to Camp Prairie Schooner to warm up from their day in the snow and make dinner.
